Nigel Shipley is a painter of urban landscapes in oils. His pictures reflect the streets, waterways and hidden corners of Bristol. By painting in the open air, directly from the scene, he achieves a freshness and life that cannot be obtained by painting in a studio from photographs or sketches. The process of making a painting begins by finding a composition that catches his eye. He will then make several sketches of the scene to decide on the composition and scale of the picture. After thinking about how best to approach this painting (the mood and weather conditions that it will capture etc..) he will pick a time when the weather is right and complete the painting on site, usually in one sitting of up to 8 hrs.
Nigel Shipley studied at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art. He moved to Bristol in 1989, and now lives in South Bristol.
