Lucy Johnson

Since I made my first serious pieces at college I have worked intuitively, being drawn to a subject without knowing why, and it is through the process of exploration in making a piece that I learn what it is that fascinates me as an artist. My aim has always been to develop the properties of the materials I use rather than to gain control over the outcome of the technique.

Colour is a major influence on my work. Throughout my life, distinct colour shifts have occurred as I have moved to different locations. I spent my childhood in Kenya and this has had a profound effect on my artwork. A recent trip back there has influenced much of the work currently on display. My pieces are not representations of actual scenes, but distillations of feelings about these places. They also contain memories of my experiences – scenes, sounds, emotions.

I currently work in a secondary school where I teach Art and Textiles.
