Jane Eveleigh

Jewellery captured my imagination as a child. My grandmother would let me play with her jewels, if I was good, all very loved and part of her style. Stories of Marco Polo, The Moonstone and lost treasure ships fuelled my imagination.

During the 1980s I was a regular visitor to the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol, visiting the frequent contemporary jewellery exhibitions, showcasing innovative, international jewellery. In the 1990s I studied at Filton College in Queens Road, Bristol for ONC and HNC in Jewellery.

A member of the Asscociation of Contemporary Jewellery (ACJ), I was one of the organisers of 'Jewellery Unlimited', a national jewellery exhibition, held at the Bristol City Museum in 2004, over three months.

Over the last few years, I have spent much time by the Dorset coast, studying natural forms, recurring patterns and rhythms. I am interested by patterns in nature and in people. We flatter ourselves that we are all individuals, are we though? Daily beachcombing,in all weathers, has brought an appreciation of nature and the need for waterproof clothing. I like to watch the changes in the sea and coastline, the magnificent mutability. Patterns sometimes reveal themselves so slowly, a lifetime of observation only scrapes the surface and of course you have to be paying attention.

I enjoy making one off pieces, which are unique. New this year is my pattern approach, photo etchin silver to produce a pattern, then making different designs from the same base.

I make jewellery because I want to, it gives me pleasure to watch others gaining enjoyment from owning and wearing it. Possibly part of a cosmic pattern!
