My work focuses on the body. I find the human figure unpredictable, constantly changing and challenging. There is a connection between the artist and the model, you can capture their/your personality and emotions without it being a portrait/self portrait. I find the process intuitive; I work quickly and only allow myself to reflect on what I have done afterwards - and then change it. I capture an impression of what I see, focusing on elements to make them more dynamic - emphasising complementry colours and how they react to each other. I build up layers, creating texture, pattern and movement. Composition is important, I want the body to dominate the canvas and its outside environment, as well as showing the stillness and sensuality within the body.
Abstracts and landscapes are new to my work, and have predominantly come from experimenting with newly learnt methods (collagraph etchings and screenprinting). Some still have a element of the figure in them.
I am inspired by the following artists; Jenny Saville, Cecily Brown, Marlene Dumas, Tai-Shan Schierenberg, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele, Van-Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec, Gauguin, Matisse. I like their expressionistic style. Their dynamic compositions, vivid use of colour, line and their application of paint, making bold visual impact with the viewer.
