My work focuses on the structures and spaces of urban and industrial environments. Power stations, coal silos, asphalt plants and wind farms are set in desolate landscapes, uninhabited by people almost as if they have been abandoned. A recurring theme is energy production, both the ‘traditional’ forms of coal and gas and the newer use of wind power. Pervading the work is the sense of both man‚ ‘industry' and impact on the natural environment and also of his fragility in that environment.
I am interested in the everyday aspects of the man-made landscape. The act of painting draws out the beautiful qualities of buildings and places that are generally considered ugly. There is a sense of awe and monumentality but at the same time of ordinariness about the work.
