Laurence Ketteringham

This is the first time I’ve shown any of my photos outside of my own house, so please go easy on me! Though I take a lot of photos (a downside of digital photography) I am showing just a few framed enlargements and a set of photos compiled into a book.

I’ve been interested in photography for as long as I can remember, but especially since my father bought me a camera when I was maybe 15 or 16. I was, and still am enormously grateful, as the camera was an Olympus OM-4 Ti, almost the last model in a series of fantastic film cameras from Olympus with features that rival many modern and very pricey modern digital cameras.

My series of prints focusing on the buildings of Bristol has been growing for about three years and shows no sign of stopping. What started as an obvious choice of theme (the coloured terraces of Bristol helped me to fall in love with Bristol after leaving the beach huts of Brighton in 1995) is gradually turning into an obsession! Everywhere I go in Bristol I find myself imagining how I could turn each view into a print.

I love the fact that screen-printing provides me with the choice of representing house colours as they are, or repainting whole swathes of Bristol by remixing my inks.

I am a textile artist and printmaker. I will mostly be exhibiting textile work at the art trail, and a few prints. The prints will be collagraphs and viscosity prints, a technique using deep acid etching where three colours can be used on a single copper plate with only one pull through the press. Both of these printing methods allow a degree of uncertainty and spontaneity to emerge during the printing process which i really like. The element of surprise always interests me!

I have studied textile design at Liverpool University and have qualified as a lecturer.

After teaching arts and crafts to the disabled for sixteen years, I now run a small business specialising in textile art. I continue to teach on a very part-time basis. I specialise in making a range of hand dyed and painted silk and velvet scarves, cushions and wall hangings, producing at least one new range of scarves each year.

In 2002 I produced 'Choice Cards' - a pack of 52 illustrated cards detailing choice locations to visit in Bristol. Since then I have been painting and photographing the docks and recording the areas that are being swallowed up by modern developement. My current project is a range of greetings cards which use a mixture of illustration and photography printed on recycled paper and which show nostalgic scenes of Bristol docks.
