I took some time out during the summer of 2007 and went to Cyprus College of Art for their Summer Studio Programme. I was extremely inspired by the surroundings and the people around me and spent most of my time drawing people on the beach and various scenes around the seafront. I've been drawing anything that takes my fancy since!

My larger scale work is currently on show in the Grainhouse Cafe at Bristol YHA, 14 Narrow Quay until the end on May.

Acrylic and pastel

Attention very very monstrous!!!!
Don’t watch them if you suffer through the Eustachian tube or galloping sleeps.
Horror ! Terror ! Dread ! like a blue racoon break dancing or cutting the nails of a centipede
You will have the bristle on your shoulder blade, you will count mutant sheep to sleep and you will have nightmares when you are in the toilet against a wicked and rough toilet paper,,,,
You are advised incautious,,,,

For the Southbank Bristol Arts Trail 2008 I will be showing a series of paintings of shoes discarded on the beach. My main interest lay in the idea that every shoe can tell a story.

I will also be showing paper flowers made from the 2007 Arts Trail guides. This explores what happens when language becomes redundant and also ideas around how we keep souvenirs of special places and events.

My work is influenced by subjectivism and existentialism. Using mainly photographs of myself I create work which is influenced by poetry and by my own thoughts, feelings and philosophies of a particular time. I use several motifs which occur regularly such as hands which are to represent creativity, eyes to represent inner self and well being and bee boxes which represent entrapment, frustration and control. Other motifs include wings, feathers, birds, stones, heads and feet. Read more →

Nigel Shipley

Nigel Shipley’s landscape and cityscape oil paintings of Bristol and surrounding area have a rich sense of atmosphere and energy. He achieves this by painting outdoors, in front of his scene, and does not paint in a studio from photographs or sketches. He trained at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art, and regularly exhibits in Bristol and Cardiff. To see his work and find out more about him please visit his website at www.nigelshipley.moonfruit.com
