St Peter’s Court, No. 1 - Grant Bradley Gallery

The selection of photographs showing at the Grant Bradley Gallery were taken over the last three years. I would describe my work as 'quiet photography' that connects with a location by focusing on the detail; it explores the painterly quality that photography can bring to rural as well as urban landscape.

The Bard of Windmill Hill

I see my unique selling point as a subtle synthesis of humour and philosophy that embodies both accessiblity and sophistication. I like to get you to think but not to take your thoughts too seriously. Sometimes I see my work as being rooted in humorous philosophy, whilst at other times it seems more akin to philosophical humour.

Dr Phil Hammond (Radio 4 personality) said on Radio Bristol: “What’s great about these poems is that they are actually proper poems, they are properly crafted…the range and tone is huge”.

I studied for my BA (Hons) degree in Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design and Sunderland University where I developed an interest in wildlife and portrait painting. Whilst studying in Bournemouth I won the Student Showcase from Artist & Illustrators magazine.

Like many creative people the struggle to make ends meet meant that after graduating I had to swap the canvas for the computer. I have recently returned to my first passion of painting after a number of years working in architectural firms in Bristol.

Ron

During the Art Trail my work can be seen at the Grant Bradley Gallery. I am exhibiting large scale portraits in pastel. The Rolling Stones are an enigma. The adage 'too old to rock & roll, too young to die' doesn't apply. When selecting a pose of 'Ron', I wanted to capture the battle scars both physical and psychological, of a life of rock and roll. I work from imagination to create my own poetic vision of the world. My subject matter reflects an interest in myth, folklore, history and magic and my characters express both the light and darker sides of human nature.

For this year’s Art Trail, I will be showing work at the Grant Bradley Gallery, but also opening my venue, 6 Braunton Rd for a low key show, where I will have a sale of old work.

South Bristol View

I love to draw and followed this love to a degree course in Illustration at Norwich School of Art & Design where I spent lots of time drawing ramshackle boats and dilapidated old warehouses. Since moving to Bristol I have found beauty in the electic mix of architecture lining the city's streets and seek to convey this and Bristol's unique atmosphere through lively, colourful paintings - see www.sallyheasley.co.uk for more. My work has been selected for exhibition by the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours at the Mall Galleries in London, March - April 2008.
