The Wraiths

wraiths.jpg

The Wraiths set old poems to music,
and they do it fantastically well...

"Ethereal and splintered by turns...a strange Victorian world of velvet menace. Odes by Dickinson, Wilde and Hardy, all set to slow-burn acoustic soundtracks that grew assuredly from placid to menacing."

The Hand

IMGP5502.JPG

We met a coupla years ago, down Bristol harbour working on the ferry-boats,
where we would sing songs on sunny days, and then suddenly it occured to us -
we should make some songs of our own, and so we started to write together from scratch
using kora, banjo, ukelele, piano, harmonium, autoharp and clarinet.

Jaaja

Jaaja are a band of must-see musicians from Nagoya in Japan,
playing a range of instruments but mostly guitar and accordion,
they sometimes dress their guitars and themselves in strange costumes,
and they sing with the furious passion of gypsies.

Ichi

Ichi's one man band kit...

Ichi, from Nagoya in Japan, takes the notion of a one-man band to new limits - combining steel-drum with ping-pong balls, tape-loops with double bass and trumpet with bongos, all in the space of one short set. Somehow there's an ancient, ritualistic feel to his performances, he's like the misplaced leader of a tribe and perhaps he will be - it's this kind of excellence and innovation which inspires a cult following.
