One star awake

Sue Mara

New duo One Star Awake sing and play traditional folk songs from England, Ireland and Scotland, plus a couple of compositions. Sue Mara's vocals are accompanied by Anna Kissell's fiddle, or on some songs, we both sing acapella in close harmony. Occasionally we’re joined by other musicians; on our current demo, for example, jazz pianist Pete Rosser guests on one track.

We've just started playing gigs as a duo, including supporting Martin Carthy recently.

The gorgeous songs we sing and play are usually slow, haunting, atmospheric - even the up-tempo ones carry a dark shimmer...

I hope you are enjoying the Arts Trail here in South Bristol. I work in the medium of mosaic and use stained glass as its has a wonderful rich, vibrant colour and creates such light and reflections that transform the subject matter. I take inspiration from the colour and richness thats evident in the world around us. I have a passion for shape, form and pattern and this is expressed in abstract and representational pieces.

Dave Bain creates illustrations and currently resides in south Bristol.
He works in a number of ways, from a naive painting style to mixed media techniques. His work is highly commended by the Macmillan Children's Prize and as well as being selected for various illustration annuals, his pictures are also used as examples in the book, 'Illustration - A Theoretical & Contextual Perspective' written by Alan Male (AVA Academia - 2007). Clients he has illustrated for include Nokia, the NSPCC, Shirted Ape, Advice To Sink In Slowly and Harcourt Press.
